UMBY Psychologists Not Only Provide Psychological Services But Are Required to Write Scientific Articles
The Psychology Professional Education Study Program at Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta (UMBY) held the "Writing for Publication: Workshop on Writing Scientific Articles from Psychological Practice Reports" on Monday, November 24, 2025.
The workshop was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at UMBY, Reny Yuniasanti, M.Psi., Ph.D., Psychologist, who in her remarks emphasized the importance of scientific writing skills for future psychologists. She stated that psychologists must not only be skilled at providing services but also be able to produce reliable scientific evidence, particularly regarding the practice of psychological interventions in Indonesia.
"Writing scientific articles is a tangible contribution of psychologists to enriching the body of knowledge and having a broader impact on society," stated the Dean of Psychology to the 24 student participants.
The workshop featured Martaria Rizky Rinaldi, M.Psi., Psychologist, a lecturer in the Faculty of Psychology, as the main speaker. Martaria presented the core material on how to transform professional practice reports into scientific articles worthy of publication.
Martaria explained the two main formats for writing quasi-experimental articles: for group cases and case reports for individual cases. The material was presented concisely and in a practical manner, emphasizing the IMRAD structure: how researchers write the theoretical basis in the Introduction, explain procedures coherently and transparently in the Methods section, present results objectively in the Results section, and provide scientific interpretation in the Discussion section.
Participants received writing examples, technical steps, and templates from the module that can be used to help them understand the writing process systematically. Martaria also provided several practical tips to increase the chances of articles being accepted into journals, including ensuring clear novelty, using up-to-date primary references, maintaining consistent logical flow, and strictly adhering to the journal's style guidelines from the initial draft.
In the mentoring session, students began drafting their articles with direct guidance from the presenter. The discussion was interactive, covering the flow of the writing, strengthening scientific arguments, and aligning the manuscript with academic publication standards.
Martaria also shared her experience in scientific publication. By 2025, she had published 23 articles, including three Scopus articles (two Q1 and one Q2), and several books with national circulation. This experience inspired participants to begin writing and preparing articles for publication.
"The most fundamental elements in producing a quality article are a clear research focus, methodological rigor, and honest and transparent data presentation," said Martaria.
Furthermore, Martaria emphasized the importance of ensuring a strong connection between the article's sections, using effective academic language, and selecting journals appropriate to the topic's scope.
This activity is part of the UMBY Faculty of Psychology's commitment to preparing prospective psychologists who are scientifically and professionally competent. Through this workshop, students are expected to be able to transform their practice reports into publishable scientific articles, thereby contributing to the development of psychology science and practice in Indonesia.
