UMBY Psychology Lecturer Equips Parents with Strategies for Building Resilient Character in Children

UMBY Psychology Lecturer Equips Parents with Strategies for Building Resilient Character in Children

Jelang Hardika, M.Psi., Psychologist, a lecturer in the Faculty of Psychology at Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta (UMBY), emphasized the importance of the family as the primary foundation for shaping children's character. He delivered this during a parenting seminar titled "Resilient and Confident Children Start at Home" on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. The seminar was held online via Zoom and attended by 40 parents.

This activity was held as part of a Community Service (PkM) program in collaboration with the Yogyakarta City Library and Archives Office. Jelang Hardika, M.Psi., Psychologist, served as the PkM Chair and keynote speaker, with Dr. Martaria Rizky Rinaldi, M.Psi., Psychologist, as a member.

In his presentation, Jelang explained that the way parents interact with their children on a daily basis has a long-term impact on the development of children's self-esteem and resilience.

"Home is the first place a child learns about themselves. From the way parents speak and respond, children begin to form beliefs about their worth and capabilities," she explained.

She also emphasized the importance of affirmative communication in parenting. According to her, the words parents use will become a child's "inner voice" in the future.
"Every sentence we speak is actually writing a story in a child's mind. Therefore, it is important for parents to use language that is empowering, not disempowering," Jelang added.

Furthermore, Jelang explained that a resilient child is not one who never experiences difficulties, but one who is able to bounce back from failure. Therefore, the role of parents is not to protect children from problems, but rather to equip them with the skills to face challenges healthily.

The activity was interactive and highly enthusiastic from the participants. This was evident in the many questions asked, ranging from how to build emotional closeness with adult children, strategies for dealing with children who are easily angered and frustrated, to how to maintain consistent communication to develop a positive inner voice in children.

One participant, Alifia Intan H. (Bantul), admitted to gaining new insights from this activity. "The material is very relatable to everyday life as a parent. I've come to understand more deeply the significant role of the family in shaping a child's character, and that many small things can have a significant impact," she said.

Through this activity, the UMBY Faculty of Psychology strives to bridge academic psychology with the practical needs of society. This program also demonstrates the university's commitment to supporting the emotionally healthy growth and development of children through science-based education.
