UMBY Psychology Lecturer Serves as Judge for DIY Essay Competition, Encouraging Younger Generation to Think Critically
Dr. Martaria Rizky Rinaldi, M.Psi., a lecturer from the Faculty of Psychology at Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta (UMBY), was appointed as a judge in the Essay Writing Competition for Junior High Schools (SMP/MTs) throughout the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), held by the Yogyakarta City Library and Archives Office on Thursday (April 30, 2026) at the office's office.
Martaria's involvement as a judge from the academic community was a highlight, demonstrating the role of UMBY Psychology lecturers in promoting literacy and critical thinking skills among students.
The competition attracted approximately 100 participants, who were then narrowed down to 15 finalists for the final judging stage. The final was opened by the Acting Head of the Yogyakarta City Library and Archives Office, Patricia Heny Dian Anitasari, S.H., M.Hum., who emphasized the importance of literacy as a tool for the younger generation to face future challenges.
Patricia Heny also expressed her appreciation for the involvement of academics in the event, including the presence of Dr. Martaria Rizky Rinaldi as a judge from the university community. "We thank the judges for their contributions and involvement, especially those from the academic community, who have supported the assessment process and the development of student literacy through this activity," she said.
During the judging process, Martaria assessed not only linguistic aspects, but also the depth of analysis and strength of participants' ideas. "Writing essays trains children to think critically and to express their ideas boldly. This is not just a competition, but a process of developing a way of thinking that they will carry into the future," she said.
In addition to Martaria, the panel of judges also included Maya Ferry Oktavia, M.Pd., as the Reading Ambassador for the general category, and Mutiara Najumah Muharam, as the Reading Ambassador for the student category, ensuring a comprehensive assessment process from various perspectives.
The final results of the competition declared Shafa Annaura Hidayasari from SMPN 8 Yogyakarta as the first place winner with a score of 2786.2. Second place went to Allan Ananta Kagisa Banum Albana from SMPN 15 Yogyakarta with a score of 2776.5, while third place went to Arfa Griselda Malvigie from SMPN 1 Godean.
Dr. Martaria Rizky Rinaldi's presence at this event emphasized the active role of UMBY Psychology lecturers in the public sphere, not only as academics on campus, but also as part of efforts to improve literacy and develop the potential of the younger generation at the regional level.
